Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is a compound that helps produce cellular energy. It is produced naturally in the body and stored in the mitochondria of cells for energy production, protection against oxidative stress and disease-causing bacteria or viruses. Heart disease, brain disorders, diabetes and cancer have been linked to low levels of CoQ10, and only one thing is certain: it has a wide range of benefits for human health.

 

However, its production decreases as a person grows older, which is why the elderly seem to have a deficiency of it. Some other causes of CoQ10 deficiency include:

• Nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B6 deficiency
• Genetic problems with CoQ10 synthesis or use
• Increased tissue demands due to disease
• Mitochondrial diseases
• Oxidative stress due to aging
• Side effects of statin treatments
