Snoring

Nocturnal...noise pollution!

Maybe you are one of those who suffer from the noise in the next pillow... or maybe you are the cause of the "noise pollution" during the night, the good news is that your or your partner's snoring can stop bothering you without having to change rooms.

Why do we snore?

The relaxation of the muscle tone of the neck muscles during sleep  causes vibration and oscillation of the soft tissues, resulting in the well-known and unpleasant noise of snoring.

The causes of snoring

The morphology of the nose such as crooked nasal septum, oversized nostrils, nasal polyps, meatus or other reasons  that have to do with the throat such as large tonsils, hypertrophic vulvar, narrow lateral pharyngeal arches are some of the most common causes of snoring.

Other daily habits that may cause or worsen existing snoring may be: obesity, smoking, large meals especially late at night, supine sleeping position, daily use of alcohol, use of sedatives or hypnotics substances and excessive fatigue during the day.

Snoring can be intermittent or continuous, sporadic, frequent or daily. It is often caused when lying down (on the back) and occurs or worsens when we are tired or when we have eaten or drunk alcohol before bed. It can lead to poor quality sleep, with effects on the daily life of the person who snores.

What helps?

There are several treatments that can help us deal with snoring, with our lifestyle playing a fairly important role. For milder cases, adapting to a healthier lifestyle with regular exercise and a healthy diet is an effective prescription. In this way, not only the muscles of the body are exercised, but the muscles of the tongue are also indirectly strengthened, while by losing weight, we reduce the deposition of fat in the tissues and in the neck. Another good tip is to avoid taking medications (tranquilizers, antihistamines) or alcohol before bed since they relax the muscles and airways responsible for snoring. Also, it is good that the last meal of the day should be at least three hours before sleep, while the time and duration of sleep should be fixed.

Nasal strips (Breathe Right), nutritional supplements (Charak) and nasal cleaning systems (A.vogel) help to free up the nasal passages, reducing or eliminating annoying snoring.
