Warts

What is an wart?

A wart  refers to an annoying but harmless bump on the skin that has the texture of a cauliflower. It usually appears on the hands and feet, but it can also develop on other parts of the body. However, it is highly contagious and to prevent their spread, you should treat it immediately and avoid direct skin contact with other warts. Often they reoccur and this usually happens when you don't take these precautions.

What causes warts?

Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus causes skin cells to multiply rapidly, resulting in the development of benign bumps that are more annoying than dangerous, but which are highly contagious. There are over 70 different subtypes of HPV that cause warts. The different types of the virus usually cause hives in different parts of the body. The virus is spread by direct skin contact or by touching wet surfaces, such as pool floors and locker rooms, that have been infested by people who have warts. After initial contact, HPV can remain inactive or latent in the skin, and there may not be immediately visible symptoms. This means that many people may be carriers of HPV without ever knowing it. It may even take several months for an wart to develop.

Where do they appear?
  • Common warts: They usually develop on the fingers, back of the palm, hands and feet.
  • Warts on the feet: They usually appear on the soles of the feet
  • Smooth warts: They mainly appear on the face as small painless papules and due to shaving they can spread very quickly.
