Copper: A very useful trace element for our health

Copper participates in a multitude of body functions. Some of them are: the absorption of iron, the transport of oxygen, the formation of hemoglobin and the formation of connective tissue. It also contributes to the functioning of the central nervous system, to the formation and maintenance of myelin, etc.

     

Copper plays an important role:

• in the binding of free radicals
• in the absorption of iron
• in bone formation
• in the formation of elastin, a key component of skin, bones and connective tissue.
• in strengthening the immune system
• maintaining muscle tone
• in wound healing
• in determining hair and skin color
• in the formation of myelin which is the protective covering of the nerves.

Sources of copper

Copper is found in shellfish, meat (liver, kidney), whole grains, nuts, beans, chocolate, cocoa, potatoes, dark green vegetables and some dried fruits such as the plums.
