Omega 3-6-9 Fatty Acids

Fatty acids for a healthy heart, immunity...and more!

Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats, a type of fat that your body cannot produce. Since the human body cannot produce omega-3s, these fats are referred to as ''essential'', meaning they must be obtained from other sources, such as diet and special supplements.

Omega-6 fatty acids
Like omega-3, omega-6 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are equally necessary, so they must also be taken from the diet. They mainly provide energy, but they also play a key role in the proper functioning of the immune system.

Omega-9 fatty acids
Omega-9 fatty acids are monounsaturated, meaning they have only one double bond. Oleic acid is the most common omega-9 fatty acid and the most common monounsaturated fatty acid in the diet. These are not strictly "necessary" as the body can produce them on its own. However, eating omega-9-rich foods instead of other types of fat may have health benefits such as improved insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation.
