There are a few different mechanisms by which tanning products can turn your light skin tone into a healthier-looking tan. The two most common actions involve either speeding up the rate at which your skin tans (tan accelerators) or using a chemical reaction to discolor the dead cells.

 

The best and most common of these products are bronzers, where the main active ingredient of most is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is a sugar that reacts with the dead skin cells of the epidermis, causing them to change color. The duration of the effect depends on both the product and the cells of each skin, but usually lasts 3 to 7 days.

 

Accelerators, on the other hand, work in such a way as to enhance the natural process of tanning, which means you will actually have to spend some time outside. Their active ingredient is usually tyrosine, an amino acid that stimulates the formation of melanin.
