Diarrhea: Causes and Treatment

We've all felt that urgent need to head to the bathroom with stomach aches at some point in our lives. The uncomfortable condition of diarrhea is most often the result of some food or infection. Diarrhea ie frequent bowel movements with  loose or watery, loose stools are a common condition and usually not serious. Many people may experience diarrhea once or twice a year, but it usually lasts two to three days and can be managed with diet.

Causes that can cause diarrhea?

• Viruses
• Food poisoning
• Medications strip
• Problems digesting certain foods (coeliac or gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, etc.)
• Diseases of the digestive system

How can you deal with it?

Moisturize

During diarrhea you lose a lot of fluids, but at the same time you lose electrolytes and minerals such as sodium and potassium, which are important for the functioning of the body. A good practice is therefore to drink plenty of fluids. Consume at least two liters i.e. about eight glasses of fluids a day. Water has no electrolytes, but is kind to the stomach and will help replace some of the fluids you've lost. You can also consider other options such as tea with honey, sports drinks, non-carbonated and non-caffeinated soft drinks, and fruit juices.

Watch your diet

You consume a small amount of food, preferring potatoes, pasta, rice, oats, bananas, soups and boiled vegetables. It is one of the few cases that the  salt in food can  help.

Probiotics

Probiotics contribute positively to the treatment of diarrhea caused by pathogenic microorganisms and can prevent or even improve diarrhea by their effect on the immune system. They also protect against infections because they compete with pathogenic microorganisms and may prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria through the production of substances that inhibit their growth and create a negative environment in the gastrointestinal tract.
