For Τhe Eyes

The most common eye diseases

For most people, sight is the most useful of all the senses as it allows us to understand the world around us. Therefore, it is important to maintain good eye health and ensure their good future function. Most people experience eye problems from time to time, which tend to increase with age.

Dry eye

The cause of dry eyes is the lack of tears, which are necessary to maintain healthy eyes, free from infections. Decreased tear production is often due to things that cannot be avoided such as:
  • Underlying medical conditions
  • Old age
  • Use of certain medications
  • Medical procedures
You can avoid dry eyes by protecting your eyes with sunglasses on windy and dry days or if you work outdoors. Not blinking enough can also cause dry eyes. This can happen when you concentrate on reading, driving or working on the computer for a long time. To avoid this, take short breaks from your work to rest your eyes. Lubricating eye drops also help prevent dry eyes. Research has shown that vitamin A and cyclosporine drops can lead to great improvement in dry eye symptoms.

Allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when the outer part of the eye becomes swollen or irritated due to pollen, dust, or other substances that cause allergies. This is because allergens release a chemical called histamine in the eyes, which causes the blood vessels in the outer layer of the eye to swell.

The best way to avoid allergic conjunctivitis is to avoid the substances that cause it. However, eye drops and antihistamines can also help prevent allergic reactions.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of conditions that combine to damage the optic nerve. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eyes and is due to heredity, diabetes, eye injury or lack of exercise.

Not all cases of glaucoma can be prevented, but there are some steps that can prevent it from getting worse.
  • Glaucoma treatment is most effective when given early. Experts agree that the best preventative step for glaucoma is regular eye care and eye exams, especially if you have diabetes.
  • Frequent and safe exercise reduces eye pressure.
  • It is also important to wear eye protection when using power tools or doing any sport that may cause injury.

Macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a common eye condition, especially in people over the age of 50. It damages the back of the eye, leading to difficulty seeing objects directly in front.

Researchers have found links between age-related macular degeneration and certain lifestyle choices. Experts say you can reduce your risk in the following ways:
  • Avoid smoking
  • Frequent exercise
  • Maintenance of normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Healthy and balanced diet
