Toothpastes

Which toothpaste should I choose?

Toothpaste when used with proper brushing technique has a great contribution to oral health. But how do you choose the right toothpaste for your teeth with the wide variety on the market? First of all, it helps to distinguish the main categories and identify the ingredients they contain.

Anti-Caries Toothpastes
Almost all modern toothpastes contain fluoride, which is now considered an absolutely essential ingredient for dental health. The widespread use of fluoride toothpastes is the main factor that has led to the significant reduction in dental caries worldwide in recent years. Fluoride strengthens the enamel of the teeth and protects it from the acids produced by the germs of dental plaque, protecting them from caries. Fluoride in toothpastes is usually contained as sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate or stannous fluoride in concentrations up to 1450ppm.

Toothpastes against Gingivitis
These toothpastes, in addition to fluoride, also contain antimicrobial agents such as triclosan, zinc citrate, etc. Their antimicrobial ingredients aim to prevent the growth of microbial plaque until the moment of the next brushing, reducing the risk of developing gingivitis problems.

Anti-Stone Toothpastes
If we do not properly remove the microbial plaque from our teeth, it hardens and turns into stone. Some people are more prone to stone build-up. Special antitartar toothpastes contain pyrophosphates that prevent calcium and magnesium from being deposited on the teeth. However, they cannot dissolve and remove tartar that is already present on the teeth, which only your dentist can do.

Whitening Toothpastes
Whitening toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients that help clean and prevent tooth staining. Such are phosphates, carbonates, silicon compounds and aluminum compounds. Some whitening toothpastes also contain hydrogen peroxide, but in low amounts and with dubious results.

Toothpastes for Sensitive Teeth
Many people experience tooth sensitivity, especially when consuming cold foods and drinks. This is mainly due to the exposure of part of the root of the teeth due to receding gums, or it can also be caused by persistent tooth brushing, gum disease or aging, or a combination of all the above factors. The active ingredients contained in toothpastes for sensitive teeth are divided into two categories: The first category includes potassium nitrate and potassium citrate that interrupt the transmission of signals, and therefore pain, through the nerves. In order to see the first results, at least two weeks of use must pass. The second category includes ingredients such as strontium, arginine and calcium phosphate salts. Their function is based on clogging the pores in the roots of the teeth. Strontium is an effective tooth desensitizer.

Children's Toothpastes

The use of fluoride toothpaste is allowed after the age of 3. Until 3 years of age teeth should be brushed either without toothpaste or using children's toothpaste without fluoride. After that and until the age of 6 years, specialized children's toothpastes containing a lower concentration of fluoride (250-1000ppm) must be used, in order not to endanger children due to the possible ingestion of the toothpaste. Also, the children's ones usually have flavors that are more enjoyable for children. From the age of 6 children can use toothpastes that adults use.
