Eye Health: What nutrients should our diet have?

When we refer to good nutrition, our minds associate thoughts about the general health and well-being of the body, but rarely do we think about a part of the body such as our eyes. Our eyes, therefore, as an active part of our body, are directly affected by our diet. A diet rich in appropriate nutrients not only contributes to the health of our eyes but also prevents vision loss due to aging or other diseases. The following foods are rich in vitamins and elements that will protect us from eye problems and ensure good vision for more years.

Vitamin A (retinol): Vitamin A, either as retinol or pro-vitamin-A (beta-carotene ), is, as we say, the vitamin of vision, as it allows the adaptation of the retina to dim light through the synthesis of a special retinal complex, rhodopsin. Deficiency symptoms of the vitamin include, among others, dry eyes, Bitot's sign, dayopia and blindness (in an advanced stage of deficiency). You will find it in the following foods: Apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, mangoes, red peppers, spinach, sweet potatoes, dairy products, liver and eggs.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is also an important antioxidant. Vitamin E protects the cell membranes in the eyes while at the same time it shields the immune system, through which the health of the eyes is ensured. We find vitamin E in nuts, sweet potatoes and especially in olive oil.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is the most well-known antioxidant nutrient, it belongs to the category of water-soluble vitamins and protects the vessels of the eyes.It protects the macula from ultraviolet radiation and enhances the action of vitamin E, which in turn strengthens the action of an antioxidant enzyme, glutathione. Vitamin C, in collaboration with carotenoids, has been shown to slow the progression of cataract. It is contained in oranges, lemons, strawberries, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, spinach, etc.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin: Lutein and zeaxanthin are two pigments found in high concentrations in the retina. Since oxidative stress has been linked to damage to the optic nerve, causing glaucoma and other vision problems, antioxidants like these may prevent further damage to the eyes. Both of these nutrients are found in dark green leafy vegetables. You'll find them in the following foods: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, corn, eggs, nectarines, papaya, lettuce.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega three fatty acids do not not only good for heart health, but they are also essential for your eyes. In particular, low levels of the fatty acids DHA and EPA are linked to vision problems, such as age-related macular degeneration. Omega three fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatory, which also fight dry eyes. They are found in flaxseed, flaxseed oil, salmon, sardines, tuna and walnuts.
