Dry Mouth

Dry mouth causes and treatment

Dry mouth is a common problem and can range from a simple nuisance to the appearance of problems concerning the overall health of the teeth.
Dry mouth refers to any condition in which your mouth is unusually dry. Most often, it is the result of a decrease in the saliva produced by the salivary glands in your mouth.
  • Saliva has a very important role for the health of the oral cavity since it helps
  • In the prevention of caries by neutralizing the acids produced by bacteria
  • In limiting the growth of bacteria
  • In the removal of food residues
  • In enhancing the sense of taste and facilitating swallowing
  • In digestion
Some of the reasons that can lead to dry mouth are:
  • The lack of a sufficient amount of fluids in the body (either because we do not hydrate properly, or because there is a large loss of fluids due to sports, but also vomiting or diarrhea).
  • With advancing age, the production of saliva by the body decreases and for this reason the elderly suffer more often from dry mouth.
  • Mouth breathing, which can be due to a "diaphragm", or polyps in the nose, but also due to a common cold or snoring.
  • Caffeine, alcohol and smoking dry out the oral mucosa.
  • Psychological factors, such as stress, neurotic conditions, depression and intense fear
  • Radiation to the face and neck area, used to treat various forms of cancer.
  • Taking drugs
  • Taking medication. Many drugs are responsible for the reduced production of saliva in the body, among them painkillers, antidepressants, antihistamines, drugs that regulate diabetes and blood pressure, antiemetics, etc.
Treatment?

Of course, the surest way to get rid of dry mouth is to treat the cause of it. If it is due to medications you may be taking, you can ask your doctor to change them or change their dosage. If now your salivary glands are not working normally, but are producing some amount of saliva, your doctor may recommend a medicine that improves the function of the salivary glands.

Until the cause of dry mouth is eliminated, you can restore moisture to your mouth in a number of ways.
There are specialized products, toothpastes, mouthwashes and sprays from well-known companies Intermed, Eggydium and Frezyderm that offer long-lasting relief from dry mouth and throat.
