Lice - Mites

Lice on the child's head? No need to Panic!

One of our most vivid childhood memories was when our mother would discover these annoying insects on our heads usually in the first days of our school year. The panic was intense and the phones to the other moms for ways to deal with it were on fire.

Fortunately times have changed and exterminating them is now an easy and relatively painless affair. And since there are a lot of myths surrounding these uninvited monsters, let's get to know exactly what they are and the ways to prevent them.

Lice - this ''unknown'' creature

Lice are, contrary to popular belief, six-legged, amphibious insects. With the  claws on their legs attach to the hairs and they tend to  they settle in the warmest areas of the head such as behind the ears and on the neck, and live for about 40 days. What is particularly unpleasant is their multiplication and easy transmission! The female louse lays up to 300 eggs (nits) every week and transmission occurs from child to child by direct head-to-head contact or by sharing infected objects such as hats, combs, tweezers, ribbons, etc. Lice move on the scalp but do not jump or fly. They usually affect children aged 3-12 years, although older children and adults can also be affected.

What are the most common symptoms?

A mother will suspect that her child has lice when she sees him constantly scratching his head. Many times the itching is so intense that the child wakes up at night. Sometimes too much scratching can scratch the child's skin, make it red, get germs in, and cause an infection.

Methods of prevention

We teach children not to share personal items with other children.
It is good for them to hang their coat on their chair and not on the common classroom hanger.
Especially for girls with long hair, the braid can protect the hair from coming into contact with other children.
Prophylactic lice repellents may prove particularly effective.

You have found the presence of lice. What happens now?

First of all, don't panic if your child or another family member has  lice. It's not something to be ashamed of, it can happen to anyone and there are now effective ways to deal with it:
  • Direct application of treatment with special shampoos and lotions are now particularly effective
  • Check every member of the family as lice may have affected not only small children but also adults. The correct treatment should also be administered to them for prevention.
  • Good wash at high temperatures for sanitary items, sheets, pillowcases, towels and everything else the child uses. High temperature (+55 degrees) will destroy lice and their eggs.
  • Frequent use of the special fine comb on wet hair is a great way to clean the head.
  • Intensive vacuuming in the children's room, on the sofas, on the car seats and in general in the areas that are in direct contact with the child
