Periodontitis

Red Alert

Regular visits to the dentist for the established dental check-up is definitely something we all know but most of us tend to postpone. Periodontal disease, which belongs to the same category as gingivitis, is a form of gum disease that we can easily prevent if we regularly check the health of our teeth. It can also affect other areas, such as the teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth, so it is important to know the ways to prevent and treat it.

What is periodontitis?

Although periodontal disease belongs to the same category as gingivitis, it is actually a more advanced form of it. Gingivitis starts as an inflammation of the gums. If it is not treated in time, then it can develop into periodontitis, where gradually  the inner layers of the gums begin to peel away from the teeth. This creates pockets on both sides of the teeth, where debris accumulates that cannot be removed by brushing, causing inflammation and receding of the tooth line. As the gum line recedes, the pockets deepen and you may be at risk of tooth loss and other serious oral conditions.

What are the symptoms?

Most people with mild gingivitis experience no symptoms at all, but if you notice anything different in your mouth or gums, be sure to let your dentist know.

Possible signs of periodontitis can be
  • Bad breath
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bleeding soft gums
  • Painful chewing of food
  • Loose teeth
At Gum, Colgate, Elgydium, Frezyderm and Colgate you can find specialized products (toothpastes, mouthwashes) for the effective treatment of periodontal tissue damage.
