Otitis

What is otitis?

Otitis is the most common ear infection and mainly affects children. It is essentially an infection (a bacterial or viral infection) of the part of the ear behind the eardrum . Otitis can become quite painful due to the inflammation and accumulation of pus in the middle ear. Children are usually more vulnerable to ear infections than adults,  indeed the majority of children will have at least one episode of otitis by the age of 3.

Causes and symptoms of otitis

Otitis is usually the result of some infection, a cold, some allergy , or any staph, pneumococcus or streptococcus infection. According to their symptoms, otitis media are divided into: acute purulent otitis media, secretory otitis media and chronic otitis media.

What are the usual symptoms?

  • Ear pain
  • Feeling that it is full of water
  • Hearing loss
  • Fever
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Discharge of fluid from the ear

What we should know if we suffer from frequent episodes of otitis:

  • We should not place  fingers, objects or swabs in the ear when trying to clean it
  • It is good to stop the swimming activity if any symptom appears in the ear
  • Timely medication in acute otitis and correct medication in the case of acute recurrent otitis leads to the eradication of pathogens and protects against serious complications.
