Colics

Infant colic: How can you relieve your baby?

Infant colic is a common and quite common condition in infants. Although they are followed by intense crying and disturbance in both the baby and the mother, it is nothing to worry about.

How do we understand that a baby is suffering from colic?

So when a healthy infant cries intensely and for long periods  without a clear cause, the possibility of colic is quite high. Colic usually occurs in infants at 2-3 weeks of age and subsides after three months of age. Infant colic is a condition that occurs in an infant who eats well, but buries with difficulty and begins to cry immediately after eating, while showing restlessness by moving arms and legs.  You will notice that he tries to fold his legs, bringing them to his belly first and then stretches them straight, trying to fold his torso and feel relief. Unlike the happy infants who immediately after eating  surrender to sleep, colicky babies begin to cry almost immediately and will fall asleep after first being exhausted.

What causes infant colic?

The causes of infant colic are not clear. There are many estimates as to where they are due but no single cause has been found. Possible causes are a lot of gas in the intestines, a wet diaper, an infant who demands attention, etc. Many argue that anxious mothers transfer their anxiety to the infant, which manifests itself in colic.

How can we deal with a colic crisis in our baby?

  • First we need to make sure that the baby does not have any problem. He may be hungry, thirsty, want a diaper change, cold, hot, gassy or bothered by the position of his body in his crib.
  • We can bring the baby in contact with our body, for example in a baby carrier or on our stomach. Physical contact calms the baby. We can try. Rub it on the tummy, back or head. Special oils for massaging the baby's tummy (Frezyderm) can also help.
  • Rhythmic movement is often soothing. Rock it gently in a rocking chair, in the stroller or on your lap.  Gently pat his back with rhythm.
  • Give your baby a pacifier, which can calm it down.
  • Lay your baby face down on your lap and rub his back. A warm bath can also relieve it.
  • The use of special probiotic drops (Aquasol) that reduce colic in infants and relieve them can be particularly helpful
