Phlebitis - Varicose Veins

What are varicose veins?

It happens very often that we hear the term phlebitis or varicose veins of the lower extremities, especially in older women, or in people whose daily life includes a lot of standing, but what are varicose veins and what could be the causes of their appearance? We could describe, in simple words, varicose veins as parts of the veins in which venous blood does not circulate well, i.e. that which returns from the lower extremities to the heart. You will often see them referred to as "phlebitis" or "phlebitis", however these designations are not official medical terms. The incidence of varicose veins in the legs is estimated at approximately 25% of the population with the rate and severity of the disease increasing dramatically with age.

Causes of varicose veins

Standing and sedentary life: People whose daily life includes excessive standing, have a much greater chance of developing varicose veins of the lower limbs even at a younger age. However, standing and sitting can negatively affect the venous network as your legs do not move enough for the blood to move through them.

Heredity: If a direct relative, such as your mother or grandmother, had varicose veins at some point in her life, then the chances of developing them too are extremely high. Problems with blood clots in the past: If you have had blood clots in the veins of your lower extremities in the past, you are quite likely to develop varicose veins, as you have already suffered significant damage to the venous network

Obesity: Excessive weight, which causes extra pressure on the lower limbs, strains them to such an extent that they swell.

Hormonal disorders: It can also be caused by major changes in women's hormones, which is why it often occurs during pregnancy.

Losing excess weight and eating a diet rich in fiber and certain nutrients contributes positively to the vascular system and helps alleviate the problem. Experts advise to add raw vegetables and fruits as well as whole grain products to our diet, while  good hydration of the body also helps.

There are also specially formulated nutritional supplements (Solgar, Gehwol, Lamberts, Health Aid, Now Foods, Power Health and Doctor's Formula) that support the proper functioning of the venous system and capillary integrity, while gels and herbal creams (with horse chestnut) relieve the heavy and tired legs.
