Itching

Itchy skin: What are the most common causes?

We've all felt the need to scratch a spot on our skin every now and then, but why the itch develops is still largely a mystery to scientists. Itching or pruritus is a sensation that we feel in any part of the body that makes us want to scratch it to relieve the discomfort which can be local, or even generalized to the whole body. It can be the result of a rash or some other condition, such as psoriasis, or dermatitis. The main causes of itching on the body can be:

Dry skin: If there are no obvious signs such as redness, rough skin or pimples in the itchy area, then a very likely cause is dry skin. Dry skin is most often the result of external environmental factors such as increased heat or cold with low humidity, or even indoors due to the use of air conditioning or central heating.

Skin conditions: Very often some skin conditions cause itching, such as eczema (dermatitis), psoriasis, lice, chicken pox, etc. In these cases it usually appears in specific places on the body and is accompanied by other symptoms, such as irritated red skin or sometimes by pimples and blisters.Diseases that affect the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes mellitus and shingles, can cause itching.

Neurological conditions: When a nerve is damaged by disease or injury it can lead to itching at the site of skin innervated by it. In this case  skin does not show any rash. Diseases that can cause this kind of itching are herpes, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, etc.

Allergic skin reactions: The wool from which many clothing items are made, chemicals, soaps and other substances can irritate the skin and cause itching. Sometimes a substance, such as poison ivy or cosmetics, causes an allergic reaction and this manifests itself in itching among other symptoms. Food allergies can also cause intense itching of the skin. The skin can exhibit an allergic reaction to many substances, such as nickel, nail polishes, perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos, latex, etc. The allergic skin reaction is usually manifested by a rash and severe itching. Food allergies can also cause severe itchy skin.

Pharmaceutical treatments: Reactions to medications, such as antibiotics, antifungals, or pain medications, can sometimes cause widespread rashes and itching.

At La Roche Posay, Ducray, Charak, Viogenesis, Biorga, Uriage, Froika and Avene you can find a wide range of face and body products (cleansing soap, body lotion, oil, spray, balm, etc.)  that soothe and relieve itching and discomfort.
