Cholesterol - Cardiovascular Function

Which vitamins contribute to heart health?

In discussions about heart health, we often hear the terms "bad" and "good" cholesterol without knowing exactly what they actually refer to. However, since cholesterol is vital for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system, it is good to know more information about it

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that circulates in the blood, which the body needs in a certain amount to maintain cell membranes and carry out other vital functions. High levels of this substance beyond the permissible limits clog the arteries, which in turn can lead to a heart attack. Cholesterol is carried in the blood by two types of proteins: a) low-density lipoproteins (LDL or ''bad'' cholesterol), which carry three-quarters of total cholesterol, b) high-density lipoproteins (HDL or ''good'' cholesterol). Blood cholesterol is measured either in total or by type of lipoproteins. High levels of LDL and total cholesterol increase the risk of a heart attack, as do low levels of HDL.
A healthy diet with the consumption of vegetables, fruits, lean meats and restriction of saturated fats, combined with exercise and avoiding smoking, can reduce the raised cholesterol values.

But vitamins play an equally important role

Omega 3 fats

As can be seen from research that has been done, omega 3 fats are a protective shield against cardiovascular diseases. More specifically, they help control both blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol. A cholesterol diet includes foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel, etc.) and plant-based foods, such as nuts.

Vitamin D

Research published from time to time documents the benefits of vitamin D in the proper functioning of the heart. Researchers from Ohio University in the US have found that vitamin D can repair damage caused to the heart by diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol. A good diet for cholesterol includes foods rich in vitamin D such as milk, tuna, salmon, eggs, and mushrooms.

Vitamin E

It is known for its strong antioxidant effects and the protection it provides to cell membranes, but vitamin E also contributes significantly to the protection of the heart. According to research, it prevents the oxidation of the lipoprotein transport mechanism in the vessels, thus protecting them from clots and clogging of the arteries, while it contributes to the reduction of blood pressure and cholesterol.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a key antioxidant component found in cell membranes and mitochondria with the main goal of producing energy in the form of ATP. It contributes to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases: it prevents thrombosis, reduces blood pressure, limits arrhythmias, fights mitral valve prolapse and relieves angina pain.
