Arthritis

Arthritis: How does a balanced diet help?

We commonly use the general term arthritis to actually describe a family of about 200 different types of arthritis that can occur in people of all ages, even children. These diseases affect everyone differently.

These diseases can be divided into three main groups:
  • Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout
  • Non-inflammatory ones, such as osteoarthritis and torn ligaments
  • Connective tissue arthritis, such as lupus and fibromyalgia
Arthritis is therefore a variety of the many different diseases that can affect the joints at any stage of a person's life.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Arthritis has two characteristics: joint pain and inflammation. A characteristic sign of arthritis is the inflammation of the joint, resulting in tenderness and swelling. People suffering from arthritis also commonly complain of joint stiffness. Symptoms vary from person to person, depending on the type and severity of arthritis

Pain in a joint can be mild, moderate or severe and is usually chronic (long-lasting). Joint pain is a symptom of all types of arthritis. Inflammation is a symptom of various types of inflammatory arthritis, as well as many cases of osteoarthritis.

How does a balanced diet help arthritis?

A patient with arthritis should have a balanced diet.
It is good to avoid drastic diets or exhaustive fasts. Calcium intake should be increased for the purpose of preventing osteoporosis later in life.A good advice is for arthritis patients to consume plenty of fluids and avoid alcoholic beverages. Their weight should be kept always at normal levels. The consumption of fatty substances must be normal so that the weight remains normal. It is known that obesity worsens the symptoms of arthritis, since the joints affected by arthritis, suffer more from excess body weight. Excess body weight also creates an increased risk of osteoarthritis.Increased physical activity and exercise help weight loss. But this is difficult for arthritis patients who have pain or other functional limitations in their joints.

Which micronutrients should not be missing from the diet?

Calcium
People with arthritis have an increased chance of developing osteoporosis and even postmenopausal women tend to have low calcium and an increased risk of weak bones. Dietary sources of calcium are dairy products, nuts, legumes and fish which we consume with bones.

Vitamin D
Essential for the absorption of calcium, vitamin D is obtained from a few foods such as tuna, sardines, eggs, liver and dairy products, to which vitamin D has been added during processing.

Iron
A large percentage of people with arthritis experience anemia. The best source of iron in the diet is red meat, but also legumes and dark green vegetables. Other micronutrients that have been observed to be deficient in people with arthritis are folic acid, vitamin C, vitamins B6 and B12, vitamin E, zinc and magnesium

At Solgar, Health Aid, Vitabiotics, Power Health, Now Foods, Lamberts and Life Extension you can find vitamin D, curcumin, hyaluronic acid, collagen and glucosamine nutritional supplements that relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life of people suffering from arthritis.
