Magnesium is a metal and is the eleventh most abundant element by mass in the human body. Magnesium ions are essential for all cells in the body and help control important biochemical functions.  More than 65% of the magnesium in the body is found in the bones, where together with calcium and phosphorus it helps form them and provides them with resilience. 39% in tissue and organs and only 1% in blood plasma. The kidneys are responsible for maintaining the normal concentration of magnesium in the blood, which has a narrow range and normal values range from 0.7 to 1.1 mmol/L. 

Magnesium plays a key role in energy release, as it is a cofactor in energy release reactions. It is also necessary for RNA synthesis and DNA replication, e.g. during cell production. In addition, magnesium is important for nerve and muscle function, including the heart muscle. It is sometimes referred to as the "anti-stress" metal, due to its role in muscle relaxation. 

Magnesium: what is good?

  • Prevents cardiovascular diseases: Magnesium is associated with reducing the chances of heart disease. There are indeed studies that report that magnesium reduces the risk of stroke.
  • Magnesium and depression: According to research, low levels of magnesium in the body can lead to depression. Magnesium relaxes the nervous system and improves mood.
